iMommies Introduces: Me!

My friend, Karen, at Thrifty Mommy tagged me with this “Tell 5 things about yourself” game.  I’ve never actually participated in a blog game, but thought it sounded fun, and since I’m sharing a few things, decided to formally introduce myself!

Me

Hi!  My name is Jennifer!  Just kidding…I’ll skip past the usual stuff that many of you already know (I adore my kids and husband, like to save money, etc.).  So here it is…five random things about me, that you may or may not already know (in no particular order)…

1.) I love holidays and parties.  Though Christmas is my favorite, and I shop for it all year, I also look forward to every other event that can possibly be given a celebration … Thanksgiving, birthdays, Easter, 4th of July, New Year’s Eve…Super Bowl!  (The scary picture above was taken at last year’s New Year’s Eve party.)

2.) My parents are both recently disabled/retired and live with us, which means we have seven people in our house…my husband and I, our 14-year old daughter, 7-year old son, 3-year old daughter, and my parents.  (Add to that: my parents’ dog, oldest daughter’s cat, and son’s dog - which also doubles as a horse for our youngest daughter).

3.) I’m very detail-oriented (which has it’s pros and cons) and can spend 30 minutes wrapping a gift, decorating a sugar cookie, designing a candy bar wrapper, or signing a birthday card.
PRO: I’m usually satisfied with the results, because if not, I just keep working at it until I am.
CON: It takes me a month of late nights to wrap for Christmas, another month to decorate a triple-batch of sugar cookies, etc.

4.) I have a full-time job outside of iMommies, though work from home most of the time.  I manage a litigation firm that primarily handles large corporate lawsuits involving intellectual property and employment law.  A few things I do away from iMommies: meet with the paralegals/attorneys handling each case, manage staff and supervisors, conduct software training for new clients, oversee document productions and miscellaneous projects throughout the discovery process, and my least favorite…prepare invoices that track every ounce of work performed within our company.

5.) I would probably be denied membership to any frugalist club…for these reasons:
a.) I don’t usually shop with coupons unless they’re printed (though I might if it didn’t take so much darn time to flip and clip!).
b.) I don’t ALWAYS choose the most economical route for every aspect of our family (I drive a Dodge Ram Mega Cab, for crying out loud, which gets about 2 miles per gallon!).
c.) It takes a great deal of time to be a true frugalist…more time than I’m willing to spend, in most cases.  (I’d never get those gifts wrapped!)

WHAT?! So what is iMommies about?  In a nutshell: daily opportunities for saving and earning money that can be employed without drastically changing your lifestyle.  For some, it may provide the additional income required to keep the electricity and water from being disconnected.  For others, it’s using an unexpected $100 to purchase eyeglasses for a child, that otherwise wouldn’t have been afforded.  And yet, for others, it may be as simple as a free houseplant, that really wasn’t needed, but adds an extra touch to the dining room table.

Though iMommies readers come from a wide variety of backgrounds, none of us have unlimited resources.  If you’re able to save a little money on groceries every month, earn a little extra spending money, give something back to your community, or make an extra difference in your own family because of something you’ve read about here…then I’ll be more than happy with that.

So those are five(ish) random things about me…wasn’t that fun!  Now it’s my turn to tag ALL of you!  Post a comment below with five things about YOU!

For those of you who respond via your own blogs, I’ll post a link for you here:

Nice to meet you (officially…lol) Jennifer!

    5 things? hmmmmm

    Here goes: Hi!

1 ) My name is Barbara, and I live in West Virginia (yes, it is a state, not the western part of Virginia! lol)

    2) I have been married since June 10,1989 and I have a wonderful hubby and two great kids ages 17 and 14 years. In addition to the hubby and kids we have 1 dog, 1 cat, 1 bird, 1 rabbit,1 hammie and 1 fish - my hubby is alsways telling me that they all are lonely and need mates! lol I say nooooooooooo

    3) I am currently unemployed - for pay anyways. When I decided I wanted children, I made the decision to stay home…I actually had not planned on staying home after they started school, but I am still here. lol We only have one vehicle so I would have to work when my hubby is home, which therefore would be also when my kids are home, and unless it comes to the point to of absloute necessity I am not budging on my family time. lol If I could find something legit to work from home,I will do that, though. ;)

    4) You’ve heard of thrill seekers, right? lol I am NOT one of those…however I am a deal seeker! Move out of my way if there is a clearance counter ! I love using coupons, but I totally agree it should be easier than cutting and flipping! So many of our stores cut back on using internet coupons there for awhile…thank goodness they have eased up on that one,at least a little bit! I stumbled upon imommies, quite by accident, a few months ago and needless to say I am hooked…hmmm….’hooked on imommies’…new slogan there for ya!

    5) I am a child at heart. Still love to be goofy! I am known to smile most of the time. I am one of those people who doesn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. Quite non-confrontational. I don’t stick up for myself very well, but don’t mess with my family! lol I am not one to be able to really say things hateful on the phone or in person, when I have a complaint, but I can write one heck of a letter! lol

Soooo as you can see I am not the most exciting person in the world…not many talents, ect but I love living life and try to be a good person to all I meet. You know…I am one of those people who help strangers in the store find things. I should get paid for that! Nah…Random acts of kindness…that’s me!

  2. Cindy Garcia, 30. January 2008, 8:16

That isn’t a scary picture, Mrs. Jennifer! Whose hair is that next to you? lol

  3. Katie in Ohio, 30. January 2008, 9:00

We have a multigenerational household too! My DH’s parents live downstairs in their own 2600 sq ft living space, all handicap accessible (DH designed our home). Where we live, it’s common to have parents/grandparents very near if not IN the household; it’s the Amish way. We are not Amish but we knew a good opportunity when we saw it! Our boys are all adopted and their birthmoms wanted them to be in families that were very close… can’t get much closer than Memah and Poppa living in the same house!

  4. Qtpies7~, 30. January 2008, 10:35

    Hmm, random.
1.) I have a family of geeks, nerds, whatever you want to call us, and we frequent debates about things like the fact that RANDOM does not exist, and cannot exist. There is no true random. Yep, geeks.
2.) I have a true phobia of spiders. It isn’t even funny. I was about to call a child home from school to come pull a tick off of my toddler one day. I couldnt’ touch it. But I got brave and pulled it off with a piece of paper! Normally I can’t even touch a picture of an arachnid.
3.) I love to read books, but I barely have time for it because I love blogging more, making doing book reviews on my blog difficult.
4.) My husband had a vasectomy during my fifth pregnancy. Then we had it reversed and had two more and counting.
5.) I PRAY for twins all the time, through all but one pregnancy, and will not want to stop having kids until I get them. (not unrealistic, I have been pregnant with twins, but only one lived, and it is in my family and I AM over 35, odds are in my favor!!!)

  5. Qtpies7~, 30. January 2008, 10:36

Oh, and my mom is about to move in with us, too! We are excited about it. My husband’s parents moved 3 blocks from us, and that was great.

  6. Jennifer Schaefer, 30. January 2008, 10:39

Very nice to meet you, Katie and Barbara! Something in common…
Barbara: I, too, love clearance sales, and frequently go to the mall, in search of “Uncle Clarence”!
    Katie: I was adopted, too!

Cindy, that hair next to me is the hair of my very good friend (and former neighbor), by the name of…’Cindy’. Since we met, about 5 years ago, our families have spent almost every holiday together! I love her to pieces! Shall I publish the full photo?

  7. Jennifer Schaefer, 30. January 2008, 10:47

Qtpies, Go for the twins! ( :) Easy for ME to say!)

  8. Rebecca, 30. January 2008, 10:52

Wow, 5 random facts about me…lets see here…
    1) I have too many animals! Lets count shall we..My oldest, Diva-dog (Lhasa Alpso), Gunner (Golden Retriever), and Barkely and Dutchess (Daschunds), Diesel (cat), and Peitri (bird–daughter named it after the flyer in land before time)
    2) My family is my world. Since the day my oldest was born I can count on one hand how many nights they have been away from me, excluding business trips.
    3) I joke to people that I have OCD, but it really isn’t a joke. When I start to do something, particularly cleaning, I become obsessed. It is completely normal for me to spend an entire weekend cleaning, and my house isn’t that dirty, I can just always find something that need to be cleaned.
    4) I love the smell of gas. Don’t know why, just do…
    5) I am proud to call Jen one of my oldest and best friends. Even though she moved way far away from me, she has remained one of my closest frineds! That is my favorite thing about imommies, it’s like a daily phone call. Proud of you lady!

  9. denise s., 30. January 2008, 11:08

Yes i would like to see the whole picture!

    5 things about me:

    1. I have a great 7 yr. old son that is very smart. Hard to pull anything over on him.
    2. Due to a misdiagnosis, I was treated for cancer last yr. that I didn’t have, and the radiation spread the infection I did have started spreading and I was flown 65 miles to another hospital with 1-3 hrs. to live. They did emergency brain surgery on me and then later lung surgery. I wasn’t expected to live and if I pulled trough it, the drs. didn’t think i would be able to live on my own again for a long time. That was in Aug. and I am living on my own.
    3. I have a great family and great friends, but it is a very small group but my family and friends mean alot to me.
    4. I have a great job. I have been there for 9 yrs.
    5. My life has turned around thanks to the experience I went through in Aug. and it has made me more appreciative of many things.

  10. Thrifty Karen, 30. January 2008, 11:09

Thanks for playing along Jennifer. I knew some of those things, but it’s nice to learn a little more about you. Don’t worry, I won’t kick you out of my frugal club. lol

  12. Reb, 30. January 2008, 11:12

Okay, 1) I have been with my handsome hubby for 16 years. We have a 13 yr old daughter and a 9 yr. old son. One of each, that was enough for me (both C-Section so I was done!). We are both 38. We have 1 beautiful lab (fixed boy), 2 very soft indoor cats (fixed, both girls), 2 beautiful black outside cats(girls…hoping for kittens from them then they will also get fixed), and a barn full of chickens.
    2) I am a stay at home mom, and very lucky that my husbands income allows me to be one! I cook dinner everynight and we all eat together, even durning hunting when my husband is out a little past dinnertime. We feel this is very important in this day and age.
    3) I love my computer, finding freebies and good deals! I love to read, its a daily thing for me and my children to have quiet time and just read a book. I crochet for extra income and just to make things for family & friends.
    4) I have a twin and we recently moved into my hometown where she also lives. I have 5 brothers & sisters and 3 step brothers & sisters.

  14. Melanie, 30. January 2008, 11:23

    I’m all about random…
    1. Just moved back to Arkansas after almost 6 years away. DH spend 6 years in the Air Force and we lived in Texas, Alaska (my favorite) and Louisiana before getting back to real life here. I think this is it–we are settling down now.
    2. I’m a geek, nerd, whatever you want to call it. The debate comment from Qtpies7–I can totally relate. Happens all the time here too. I can spot a misspelled word from a mile away and it drives me insane! Why in the world would someone put up a billboard and not proofread it???? I just want to march in there and give them a spelling lesson!
    3. I am the cookie lady. DH coaches high school basketball and I love to bake. When he has away games, I bake up a ton of goodies and send them on the bus. It’s so much fun! I get to bake and not have all these cookies sitting around to make me gain weight. Haven’t decided what I’m going to do when the season is over :-(
    4. Married 11 years last week…we have 3 kids…3, 5 and 7. They are great fun and keep me pretty busy. 3 very large cats and 1 very small dog.
    5. I’m a bargain hunter. Clearance, garage sales, thrift shops–that’s me.

2- I will soon be 43 years old, and I am married for the last 7 years to a man who is 10 years younger then myself. WOO HOO lol . Together we had 2 sons, Thanos who will soon be 6 and Vasilios who just turned 2.

  18. Angie, 30. January 2008, 11:50

I love reading these kind of things about other people. Ok, 5 things about me…

    1) I’m a highly distractible mom raising and homeschooling a highly distractible 6 yr. old boy. This means our house if full of started but not quite finished projects and cleaning is a joke. LOL I will go into the kitchen to get my son a drink, find an unopened yogurt on the floor (from my 19 mo. old), put it in the frig, see the list of library books on the frig, go look for the library books, and eventually end up on the computer adding posts to some site with a yogurt in my hand and a still thirsty kid. LOL

    2) I met my hubby on Match.com. I’m originally from NW Ohio, and he lived in SW Ohio. We talked online for 3 weeks and met on 01/01/01. Unfortunately, things moved rather quickly from there…and by the end of Jan. I was pregnant. We got married that June, Colin Matthew was born in October, and we’ve been happily married for almost 7 yrs. now. And we have 3 kids.

    3) I’m allergic to just about everything it seems. (no food as you would be able to tell if you saw me LOL). Almost all animals with fur (cats, dogs, horses, pigs, cows, hamsters, sheep, etc.) Horses are the worst, my throat will swell up and I’ll have a huge asthma attack. plus I’m allergic to feathers, dust and mold, and metals. I have to have titanium glasses cuz reg. metal glasses break out my face. I can’t wear earrings and the only jewelry that doesn’t bother me is my wedding ring.

    4) I have 5 screws in my upper jaw from having my jaw broken (on purpose). I had jaw surgery to correct/prevent TMJ and rather than re-aligning my lower jaw (they said I’d lose my chin if they did that), they broke my upper jaw. Then screwed it back in a new position. I had my teeth wired shut for about 2 months, lost 50 lbs., and since they had to clear out my sinuses during the surgery, was allergy free for about 6 months. (I was actually able to pet a horse! )

    5) I moved from NW Ohio to SW Ohio to get away from my family. LOL We live close to my DH’s family, but I can’t stand to live too close to my family. They just don’t treat me like the way I should be treated.

Well, it seems I don’t have much in common with the people that posted before me. But that’s ok, I’m sure someone else out there is like me. LOL

Thanks for doing this, Jennifer, it was fun!

  19. Paulette, 30. January 2008, 12:05

I also love IMOMMIES. It is one of the first sites I pull up everyday.
    1) I live in a triplex that houses three generations of my family. My Dad (I am his primary caretaker), my sister, my wonderful husband, and my three sons (26,15,9). Along with myself we also have 2 Chihuahuas and a cat.
    2) I shop clearance, thrift stores, garages sales and am not above ‘Trash’ collecting.
    3) My Dad and I fill 25+ stockings every year so we are always looking for freebies and cheepies to put in those stockings.
4)I wish I was better educated so that I could help with my kids homework.
5)I love to read but my favorite writers do not write fast enough.

BARBARA! You should give me a call (or email - krackley220@gmail.com) - I do Pampered Chef from home and I love it - and it’s totally legit - I just started 4 months ago, and it’s going great! We only have one car, too, but I only do shows 4-6 times per month, and I bring in an extra $600 or so a month - not to mention, I get a ton of free stuff!

    Anyway - about me:

    1. I really wanna have another baby (we have one 15 month old), but we’re currently living with my in-laws, and I think they’d kick us all out if they found out I was pregnant.
    2. I have a secret dream to lead an entire orchestra in a Rachmaninoff Concerto. Then, play the piano part to one with the orchestra.
    3. I love teaching my daughter things, but I love teaching (or trying!) teenagers more - so I actually am looking forward to when she’s 13!
    4. I can speak Spanish fluently.
    5. I love to scrapbook!

  23. Linda, 30. January 2008, 12:59

It is great to know the wide range of different people who love this site! I live in Lowell, MI and I am 28 years old.
    1. I am a first time (and only time) mother if a wonderful 13 month old baby girl. She is the world to me. I have to take extreme precautions for her because 3 months ago a man broke into my house and tried to take her. My whole life revolves around keeping her happy, healthy, and SAFE.
    2. I have WAY to many cats: 2 males and 3 females. I have a habit of needing to help cats that don’t have a great start in life.
    3. I am disabled due to my bipolar disorder. It can be embarassing. I hate that I can barely leave the house.
    4. I have a strange variety of tattoos. I have 7 that range from Tigger to U2 to Marilyn Manson. I am in the process of designinig the last 2 that I will get: One for my daughter and one in honor of my brother who passed away in 2000.
    5. I am afraid of the dark. seriously….even at 28.

  24. Tricia Deen, 30. January 2008, 13:05

Wow, lots of people out there! Awesome!
I found this site this past summer, and have enjoyed the heck out of it. I am always looking in my email for the latest, as well as checking the website. Too bad they made you use a different CC for the buy.com stuff. I loved that promotion.

    1. My fiancee and I love going to the casinos. That is our time away for ourselves. Doesn’t happen as often as we would like, but it’s our vacation.
    2. I have two wonderful girls from a previous relationship, and one new girl (2 1/2 mos) from my current relationship. We have one dog, Buddy, who is ADD :)
    3. I work as a receptionist for the Forest Service, and get to bring my baby with me. Best job ever for that reason.
    4. We live in Idaho, and hunting and fishing keep my guy away. But this year we bought a boat, so we’ll all go fishing together now. And since I’m not pregnant, we’ll get to go hunting together again too. This year was lonely for both of us.
    5. I miss my family bunches and hope to move closer to them soon. They are close to Montana and I have always wanted to live there, at least since 5th grade. I wrote a report for Social Studies on Montana, so I was hooked.
Thank you for all your wonderful work! Looking forward to another year of deals!

    I enjoy hearing about people’s lives…what a great idea!

    2. My husband is a Physical Therapist and I’m a Nurse (at home now). I joke with people that when I learned he could massage and cook…I said “I’ll take him!”

    3. My husband and I are the youngest. Me of 5 and he of 4 kids. We just have one parent left (my dad recently passed away :-( )…so enjoy those parents!

    4. I do some mystery shopping and did some fill in work this fall with flu shot clinics.

    5. I adore my family and feel very blessed. My husband is caring and sensitive (not perfect…who is). Our 12 yr old boy is a “wise souL” and an awesome boy. Our 6 yr old girl is very energetic and loves relational activities (let’s do this together-tiring sometimes). Our 20 yr old (from husband’s previous marriage) has turned into a fine young man despite some difficult periods and is also very relational.

    2. My mother lives in Africa, and my father in Japan.
    3. I have lots of tattoos and want more.
    4. I recently started my own biz with one of my best friends and can’t wait until our first event.
    5. I can relate to Angie’s #1 thing about her :)

Yay, I love reading all of these neat things about everyone. So, here it goes…

    1. I am the SAH mommy of one 5 month old person-baby and one 5 year old yorkie dog-baby. I am happily married to my wonderful husband and am amazed everyday at how blessed we are and happy we are together. I truly believe that being gracious about what you have can do wonders for your quality of life.

    2. I like to read fiction books way more than non-fiction, but love to do online research about almost any topic. I love, love, love maps and random trivia and it’s been said that I know alot about nothing.

    3. I love to do crafts of all kinds, but am somewhat of a perfectionist and worry that I won’t like my project after I start it, so I also have tons of supplies and unfinished/not-yet-started projects.

    4. I love living in Texas (and the Texas Longhorns– Hook ‘em!) and can’t imagine living anywhere else. I do wish I still lived in Austin, however. (FYI–I have been to other states and countries.)

    5. I would really enjoy starting my own at-home-business, but am so indecisive that I am unsure that the dream will ever come to fruition.

This is so cool. Learning about everyone. I am 33 yrs old, married for 14 yrs. I have 4 wonderful children, 13 1/2 yr girl, 2 1/2 yr girl, 1 1/2 yr girl, & 11 wk boy. We also have 2 dogs, 4 cats, & 2 horses. 5 random things, here we go,
    1) I just loooove clearence section of any store. That is the first place I go for. I am also a coupon fanadick. My coupon binder weighs almost as much as my son, LOL. Everyone picks on me if I pay full price for anything. They also come to me for good deals, or if there is a coupon of something they want. Now if I could teach hubby to shop with coupons I would have it made.

    2) I have been told I have OCD also. I have to have everything organized. I’m one of those people if I’m at work or somewhere hubby needs something. He calls me and I can tell him behind which cabnet door, on what shelf, so many over from the left. He complains about it, but I don’t think he would know what to do if I let it get messy. My work station at work is the same way, but worse, I have everything labeled as to where it goes, (down to my tissues).

    3) I work at GE 40hrs a wk, my part-time job. I consider my family my full time jog. I homeschool our 13 1/2, who is almost finished with the 9th grade. I hope to have her graduated before the next one starts school, so she can help me with it. I volunteer with our local sheriff’s department as mounted patrol, hince the horse’s, ( they have to earn their keep to). I am in the local fire department’s ladies auxillary where my husband is a volunteer fireman. He is also a volunteer deputy in the neighboring county. Between the 2 of us we average about 700-900 volunteer hrs a year.

    4) I am also bipolar. I was diagnosed in 1998. Has been a very ruff road, but with a wonderful husband, and in-laws it has been better than it could have been. I am free of meds right now, and hoping I stay that way. I try to educate people on it so they are not as “afraid” as they used to be when it was called manic depression. I have found alot of people really want to understand it, and want to help with it.

    5) I am probly one of few my age who still cooks almost every night, and on the stove at that, (not the micro). If we eat out more that 3 times a month, that to us would be to much. I enjoy cooking for my family. The kids enjoy helping also.

Well there’s my 5 things. I’m love reading and finding out about other people. Looking forward to reading more. Thanks for the site. I really love it.

this to amber, 30! you would like to start a at-a -home business. why not take what craft supplies you have and advertise them and then let the customer decide what they want. it could bew beading or jewelry or scrapbooking or whatever. that way it wouldn’t be what you like (being the perfectionist that you are) but what they want and you have no say in the matter beause they are paying to do this. this is just a suggestion and with computers so prevalent and emails so common she could start with friends and go from there.

    Lets see:
1)I also have a multi-generational home, I have 4 children, the oldest was killed in 2001 and the other 3 still live at home or came back home. They are 23 year old daughter, (with my darling just turn 2 grandson) a 14 year old son and a 12 year old daughter and of course my spouse. My parents also lived with us until they both passed away. My mother just recently prior to Christmas.

2)I am a disabled nurse (after 20 years) and love this site as it helps buy the little things and not so little things.

3)I collect dragons and love fairy tails.

    4) I play video games with my kids and love them. (I also play video games when they are at school but don’t tell them)

    5) I have always wanted to travel around the world and try new foods the really wierd ones.

I’m a bit late reading about all of the phenomenal people. You all are great. I am 49 years of age, have 2 adult daughters (30 and 26), and 1 son (14). I am married and have been for 30 years. Wow. I was originally a legal administrative assistant for 18 years. I am from Chicago and now located in Indiana for a year and a half. I am a mystery shopper and real estate investor. The house I am living in now was my first deal, and I’m always hunting for other deals. Imommies is a great site. I look forward to opening up that email often. Keep up the good work and productive lives. This is a lot of fun.

  35. Celine, 3. February 2008, 23:54

    1. I’ve been married 23 years to my college sweetheart, and we have 6 kids, ages 16-3.
    2. When we first got married, I wasn’t making great money, so we decided to put my paycheck into a savings account and only live on my husband’s income. After the 2nd baby arrived, it wasn’t worth it for me to work, and we have never missed my income.
    3. I usually make dinner for $5 or less for all 8 of us. (However, breakfast, lunch and snacks are the big expenses in our food budget!) We used to have 2 local grocery stores that competed for business and would do triple coupons. I would be in the store for hours, fill several carts, and pay next to nothing. But I think I almost put them out of business, and now they only offer double coupons.
    4. I’m a Girl Scout Leader, Den Leader, Room Mother, Service Unit Director for our Girl Scout Council, on the House Corp. Board for my college sorority, arrange meals for new moms at our church, assist backstage at all my children’s theater productions, serve as Team Parent for countless sports and generally volunteer way too much. No wonder I have no time to clean!
    5. About 2 years ago I started working for a new home party business that sells food and serving pieces. I love helping to throw the parties, meeting the guests, and I almost feel guilty for getting paid to have a fun evening out! I also do some mystery shopping.
