Recall: Halloween Candy To Return/Destroy

13

The horrible melamine scandal that has hospitalized tens of thousands of babies in China has been traced back to a company that also manufactures candy. With Halloween coming, and candy floating around everywhere, be sure to check your own candy purchases, as well as the candy that your children are “Treated” with on Halloween night (and thereafter). If you find any of the candies shown below, return them to the store, if possible, or throw them into a trash can that’s out of reach of your children and family pets.

Recall

Thanks to Chava for passing this along. I’ve never seen the White Rabbit candies, but know I’ve run across those chocolate gold coins in the past. Sherwood Brands Pirate’s Gold Milk Chocolate Coins have not been recalled in the US, but the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is warning Canadian consumers to return or toss these candies that are sold in Costco stores across Canada. (Canada is too close to the US – if I find any of those coins here in Texas, I’m tossing them out, anyway!) Should you have any questions, you may contact the CFIA at (800) 442-2342.

White Rabbit candy was distributed to the states of CA, GA, HI, IL, MN, NY, OR, TX, WA through wholesale distributors to retail stores, and was recalled by the USFDA. Should you have any questions, you may contact QFCO, Inc. of Burlingame, California directly at (650) 697-6633.

  1. Thank you for posting this. I had heard about the recall but it is helpful to see the candy in question and to know to which states it has been distributed.

I just looked this up on Snopes.com but there were no photos. Thanks.

Thanks for posting information about the recall- it’s the first I’ve heard of it. White Rabbit Candy is a favorite treat in our home, but we haven’t bought any in several months. Looks like one of those rare occasions where forgetting an item on your shopping list actually turns out to be a good thing.

  4. Traci says:

That’s so scary! thanks for the pics! I don’t buy that kind but I’ll be on the lookout for Halloween!

  5. Rachel says:

I purchased a pack of that White Rabbit candy at a Cost Plus, but would you believe it, when I got it home, I was unable to eat any of it because the inner wrappers WOULD NOT peel off the candy. Thank Gosh! Thanks for posting this, I’ll be sure to steer clear of it from now on out!

  6. Jodi Langevin says:

  7. Esperanza says:

I’ve read this is for Canada anyhow. I’m not really concerned.

Thank you for posting this! Unfortunetly I know that I have passed out this candy to my sunday school class…I’ll be able to talk to their parents tomarrow. I’ll be so anxious until then. Does anyone know how much of the candy a 4 year old would have to consume to be affected by the melamine?

    Thanks

White Rabbit candy is sold in a lot of Asian supermarkets and stores. It is here and we just bought some uesturday. Guess I am taking it back to the store today … thanks for the heads up.

  10. ScottysBEBE says:

Rachel the inner wrapper is rice papaer that you eat. You pop the whole thing in your mouth and the rice paper desolves. :) Just a heads up for next time if you purchase some. :)

  11. Joanna says:

I was told that the company issued this statement that the candy in question was only shipped to Canada, and that the candy in the U.S. is safe…. hopefully this helps someone:

Notice to our Customers regarding the Safety of our Candy Products Imported from China to the USA.

The safety of our products is our first priority. Customers can be assured that we have an unwavering commitment to test and assure the safety of all our products. Please note that we have not had any products containing melamine recalled in the U.S. Immediately upon the issuance of a warning by FDA about possible melamine contamination in milk-containing products from China we began to work with independent labs to confirm our products are free of melamine. Additionally, Sherwood Brands has not received any chocolate in the U.S. from China since the report on melamine. We understand that any product that may contain milk or milk proteins is being tested upon entry by the FDA. If you have questions, please email us at sales@sherwoodbrands.com.

If you are concerned about the coins recalled in Canada, please note this was an isolated situation in Canada only. These coins were not sold or shipped into the US market. Those coins were produced before the melamine warning was issued. Immediately upon notification of Melamine warning, Sherwood stopped all production and shipments. All products now shipped to both Canada and the United States are first tested for the absence of melamine prior to shipment.

Thank you for your understanding. Above all our #1 concern is our customer safety and satisfaction.
