I’ll Be Back Soon…
For those of you who aren’t on Facebook and may be wondering where I am…my husband was in the hospital for a couple of weeks undergoing plasma exchange treatments. A few days after he left, my computers (two of them!) crashed and I was left with the very archaic Blackberry method of communication.
Things are settling down now – my husband’s home, both computers have been rebuilt, and I expect to be back in a few days. As far as my husband’s condition, the plasma exchange didn’t have the dramatic impact we had hoped for, but there have been some minor improvements and all antibodies have been removed for the next three months, which means there shouldn’t be any new exacerbations within that time frame. On the flip side, his immune system was completely “disconnected” – an intentional process in which the potential benefits outweighed the risks. Thank God we know a master healer personally!

Yes, typically steroids are used to treat new exacerbations – and they’re effective 95% of the time, but in those instances where they’re not, plasma exchange is sometimes used. The objective is to filter out all antibodies (since in MS patients, they fight off good cells too).
