Free Prom Dresses For 2008 Junior/Senior Proms

I love it when readers send me great information like this!  Kathy emailed details for a local-area prom dress giveaway, that awards free prom dresses to students who otherwise couldn’t afford to go.  Wondering if there might be similar programs in other areas, I ran a few Google searches, and was delighted to see that there are, in fact, programs like this across the country.  (I saw very few programs for men’s formal attire, but there are a few.)

2008 Prom Dress Giveaways

Each program works a bit differently, but I’ll highlight the Dallas-area program, and then post a sampling of similar programs taking place now throughout different cities and states.

The Dallas, Texas program, sponsored by the Dallas Independent School District, the Dallas Police Department, and Whatchamacallit Dresses, rewards junior and senior high school students, in good standing, with a selection of free prom dresses.  Students are allowed to select from hundreds of dresses, and then attend a fashion show produced just for them.  (Did I mention I love this?!)

If you have a prom dress that is new or very gently worn, and you’ve no intention of wearing it again, all of these programs accept donations.  You’d make one young lady very happy at this year’s prom!

    Check your local freecycle group-we have a similar program in Lawrence Co., PA, and they request gowns and post when and where the gowns will be available on the freecycle forum. (www.freecycle.com)

    Thought this would be very appropriate with Recycling as well:

    Individual State Recycle, Yard Sale & Grocery deals!

    How does this benefit YOU?
    You get to get rid of excess stuff, thus decluttering your lives while getting things for free & knowing where local grocery & in-store deals can be found including local yard sales & sweepstakes.
    Therefor helping to feed, clothe & entertain your family while helping those in need.
    Many people need others help, but are afraid to ask.
    Thanks to groups like these, people have somewhere to turn for local freebies & financial help without the embarrassment, plus it’s fun!

    …It is similar to Freecycle because the group is for offering & recieving free items…
    However - here you can post your Yard Sales as well (as long as you are offerring freebies at the sale) & you can also post great local deals such as grocery ads or an item scanning cheaper than what it’s priced at & local sweepstakes.
    Other similar groups may be bigger, but that can mean disapointment if a freebie item gets posted & swamped.
    Our groups seem to be building, which is a good thing in ways of helping each other out through other local freebie means not just ‘haves & wants’.
    It’s about local community involvement in other area’s that include freebies
