“What If We All Cared Enough To Vote?”

What an excellent question…should I save my soapbox moment? Nahhhh - we have one day left before election day!

Not only will Starbucks give each voter a free tall cup of brewed coffee tomorrow, but we’ll be fulfilling our rights and responsibilities as citizens of the greatest nation in the world! My husband is especially fond of repeating a quote from our pastor a couple of weeks ago: “If you don’t vote, you’re casting your vote with the majority.”.

Starbucks: What if we all cared enough to vote?

Not sure who to vote for? Let me cast your vote for you, then! (Just kidding :) .) In all seriousness, with all of the well-written speeches, topics of debate, and promises from all candidates, which way do you vote? How do you decide? One voter CAN make a difference, and if your ballot held THE deciding vote, which way would you want the elections to go?

Environmentally-Friendly Letter To The President (& Freebie)

Thanks to Bekah for passing along this info from the Environmental Defense Fund. The EDF works to “fight global warming, protect endangered species, restore our oceans, clean up toxic pollution and promote tough clean air and water health and safety standards.” In an attempt to improve actions concerning environmental policy, the EDF has drafted a letter to both of the Presidential candidates requesting several actions to be taken during the first 100 days in office. In exchange for signing that letter, the EDF will send you a free gift of your choice: a travel mug, umbrella, or reusable shopping bag (you can also sign the letter without requesting a gift).

Make A Wish: 7th Annual World’s Largest Ice Cream Social

Thanks to Chrishawna for sharing this sweet treat with even sweeter results! Throughout September, Cold Stone Creamery is selling wall stars for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and to top it off (on Thursday, September 25th, 5pm-8pm), they’re hosting the 7th Annual World’s Largest Ice Cream Social, and all guests will be given a free 3-oz. serving of ice cream flavors inspired by two children: Jack and Emily…very special members of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

This is a great time to take the kids out for ice cream and contribute to an amazing organization for children. While free ice cream will be given to all customers, this is not just a fun and free marketing campaign to promote a national creamery chain…there’s a very powerful reason behind this promotion.

Protecting America (With A Free Emergency Radio)

Thanks to the McKids Family for passing along this timely piece…ProtectingAmerica.org is an organization that works behind the scenes to prepare for catastrophic events on several levels:

  • Improve financial protection for consumers by establishing special catastrophe backstops at the state and national level to provide recovery and rebuilding funds in case of a major natural catastrophe;
  • Support efforts to improve prevention and mitigation programs through stronger building codes;
  • Augment homeowner education and consumer protections to make sure people are better prepared for catastrophes before they strike;
  • Strengthen first responders by enhancing existing emergency response protocols;
  • Improve relief, recovery and rebuilding by developing new processes to stage and deploy essential relief materials and to make sure there are adequate building materials, supplies and licensed contractors available in the aftermath of a catastrophe

While supplies last, ProtectingAmerica.org is giving away free emergency radios to individuals and/or organizations who register as public supporters.

There are more CVS freebies than in April, though most of the purchase limits are set to three, instead of the usual five. With a new coupon valid for $3 off any $15 purchase (through 06/06/2008), May is a great month for CVS shopping.

To answer a few common questions:

2008 Free Lemonade Stand From Sunkist

Sunkist is offering free lemonade stands again this year! For those of you who didn’t order last year, this is truly a great way for children to “take a stand” in helping others. Sunkist will send your child a lemonade stand (free shipping included) if they pledge to donate all earnings to a charity…AND your child gets to select the charity (our son raised money for the National MS Society last year)! Let them give to the organization that means the most to them, and Sunkist will reward them for their giving spirit!

Included with the stand is a lemon peeler, plastic juicer, and recipes for different varieties of lemonade. The Sunkist Take a Stand site also has printable signs and sales worksheets. Great summertime activity for kids!
