Synopsis:
Hilary Swank and Richard Gere star in director Mira Nair’s biopic tracing the life of famed aviator Amelia Earhart — who made history in 1932 by becoming the first woman ever to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. It’s time for the annual Free Night of Theater again, and this year is bigger and better than ever with more than 75,000 free tickets in over 120 cities (unfortunately, there’s still a bit of a lapse throughout the Mountain Region)! The online ticket reservation system begins on October 1st in most participating regions, so check now to see if theaters are participating in your city! Most performances are scheduled to debut on October 15th, but dates and times vary by region.

It’s time for the annual Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day again! The Museum Day event is taking place in museums (and even a few zoos) across the country on Saturday, September 26th, as a celebration of our country’s culture. Though many museums are open to the public year-round without an admission cost, the Smithsonian admission card allows patrons to visit many other museums that would typically charge a fee, provided they visit on 09/26/09.
The Smithsonian admission card allows free admittance for you and a guest. Click HERE to print your Museum Day Admission Card and click HERE to select a museum to visit from the LONG list of participating museums in each state.
I know the kids in this picture are celebrating “someone’s” birthday, but that’s okay if the National Park Service wants to take credit for their happiness. After all, they are allowing the entire country to visit any of the 391 national parks free of charge on Saturday, September 26th!
There are a lot of activities to fit in this weekend’s schedule - free national park admission, free museum admission, free voting…

Free advance screening passes to Whip It (multiple theaters and cities) are available through Fox Searchlight. Most screenings are scheduled for the week of September 28th (next week!).

Synopsis:
Drew Barrymore makes her directorial debut with Whip It!, the story of an ex-beauty pageant contestant named Bliss (played by Juno’s Ellen Page) who leaves her crowns behind after joining a roller-derby team. While her mother would prefer that Bliss unlace her skates and step back before the judges, the rebellious teen instead seeks the wisdom of rowdy mentor Malice in Wonderland (Kristen Wiig) in learning the tricks of the circuit track. The Mandate Pictures production was written by roller derby star-turned-screenwriter Shauna Cross.

“It’s a beautiful day in this neighborhood,
A beautiful day for a neighbor.
Would you be mine?
Could you be mine?”
(…If I bring you flowers…?)
The FTD 15th annual Good Neighbor holiday will take place Wednesday, September 9th, 2008. Not all stores participate, but there are several FTD locations across the country that plan local events, including the free bouquet giveaways, which usually consist of a dozen flowers per visitor. The idea behind Good Neighbor Day is that you keep one flower for yourself, and give the rest away to your neighbors.
To find a participating location near you, click HERE.
(Don’t be discouraged if your local florist isn’t participating. FTD does not actually provide the flowers, so each florist is required to cover their own costs for the holiday. The participating florists deserve a big thank you…and a few extra paying orders throughout the year!)
