Make A Wish: 7th Annual World’s Largest Ice Cream Social

Thanks to Chrishawna for sharing this sweet treat with even sweeter results! Throughout September, Cold Stone Creamery is selling wall stars for the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and to top it off (on Thursday, September 25th, 5pm-8pm), they’re hosting the 7th Annual World’s Largest Ice Cream Social, and all guests will be given a free 3-oz. serving of ice cream flavors inspired by two children: Jack and Emily…very special members of the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

This is a great time to take the kids out for ice cream and contribute to an amazing organization for children. While free ice cream will be given to all customers, this is not just a fun and free marketing campaign to promote a national creamery chain…there’s a very powerful reason behind this promotion.

Museum Day 2008: September 27th Free Admission Card

Thanks to Barbara for reminding me that it’s that time of year again! For those of you who had a difficult time narrowing your selection down to just one museum from last year’s Museum Day, try another this year, thanks to the Smithsonian!

The Museum Day event is taking place in museums across the country on Saturday, September 27th, as a celebration of our country’s culture. Though many museums are open to the public year-round without an admission cost, the Smithsonian admission card allows patrons to visit many other museums that would typically charge a fee, provided they visit on 09/27/08.

National Grandparent’s Day 2008: Sharing Family Traditions

Thanks to Hazel Cole Kendle, Jennifer Liu Bryan, and Next Chapter Press for telling this great story (in hardcover for one of you!) and for sharing some simple, yet creative, ideas for celebrating our grandparents this Sunday!

Don’t Let Your Family’s History Slip Away

Ten ways to preserve your family’s unique story this National Grandparents Day

Grandparents can take the lead in helping younger generations preserve their family history this National Grandparent’s Day, according to Milford, Ohio resident Hazel Cole Kendle, the 88-year-old first-time author of the just-released Cole Family Christmas. This year’s National Grandparent’s Day will mark its 30th anniversary on Sept. 7.

“It’s a myth that young people don’t want to hear the stories their grandparents can tell,” said Kendle. “However, too often grandparents and great-grandparents feel like they must wait to be asked before telling those stories. Realize that family members often won’t ask for the first story, but once you start talking, they’ll be begging for more.”

Jennifer Liu Bryan of Alexandria, Virginia, Kendle’s granddaughter-in-law and co-author, points out that grandparents don’t have to stop with stories, either.

“There are many ways to pass along family traditions,” said Bryan. “Remember the favorite dessert your grandmother used to make or the dishes she received on her wedding day. Each item serves as a connection to the past, but we have to work to keep that chain from breaking.”

For this reason, Kendle and Bryan suggest 10 ways families can preserve their memories this Grandparents Day.

Labor Day Weekend 2008: Free Breakfast At IKEA

For those of you who live near a participating IKEA location, order a free small breakfast and cup of coffee between Saturday, August 30th and Monday, September 1st. In addition to breakfast and shopping, IKEA has a fun play room for children (though our kids enjoy touring the store and testing all of the furniture and toys!).

If you’ve not yet been to IKEA, they have items for EVERY home! The furniture is not my style, but they have a huge two-story inventory of linens, organizational gadgets, dishes and utensils, artwork, and more…in addition to their furniture lines. Their prices are excellent, and I’ve never walked out of IKEA empty-handed!

30 Cosmetic Products + Working Mother Subscription = $30

Thanks to everyone for emailing about E.L.F. cosmetics! The only product I’ve ever used from E.L.F. is the clear eyebrow mascara (keeps those brows neatly brushed in place!), but with a teenage daughter whose make-up list is almost as long as mine…I’m going to check out a few other products!

Elf Cosmetics

E.L.F. is known for their great prices - just $1 for each product. That’s a great price if you enjoy the products, but how do you know until you try? (I learned this from the Jane promotion several months ago!)
